and placed the helmet on her own head. "L.A. Law" was over by
then, and the news had come on. I touched the buttons, and
watched in amazement as Gloria's body went limp, and she
transformed, on the screen, into the female anchorwoman. There
was no visible sign that she had traded places with the
newscaster, but I knew what she was experiencing. I let her stay
there for a while then pressed the return button, restoring life
to her body on the couch. "Wow, that is great," she said. The
only limitation was that the person you transformed into had to
be on the screen. For the next two hours we played with our new
toy, trying all the features, including a timer and a second
headset that allowed both of us to enter the TV and return after
a certain time, up to one hour. We only tried that for a few
minutes, and then we went to bed. We lay there talking for a
while about the wonderful new TV set and what it could do, then
we went to sleep. For the next week or so, we spent every night
glued to the TV as we played going in and out of the set,
experiencing what it was like to be TV stars. I even used it on
Sunday afternoon, when pro football was on, and for the whole
fourth quarter, I was John Elway! I had all the skills of my new
body, and I marched Denver down the field, throwing a TD pass
against the Raiders in the last second to win the game. As I
took the hit from Howie Long on that pass, though, I wished my
pass protection was a little better, because I really got racked
up. The pain that Elway felt, I felt, but I also had the
unbelievable rush of adrenaline from throwing the winning pass.
Gloria brought me back, and I told her what had happened. "See,
I told you that the money I spent on this TV was worth it," she
said. "Let's try this," she said, pulling out a VCR tape. "They
told me that it works on tapes as well as TV shows." She put on
